June 3-6


I hope the second grade class is looking forward to getting back to school.
Hopefully everyone is feeling rested and well. This Tuesday (6/3) class will
begin again. We will continue with the schedule from where we left of
from last week.

Next week in Math we will finish Topic 18 and start the next one,
Multiplication Concepts.

For English we will take a quiz on capitalization and punctuation.

In Social Studies we continue focusing on Unit 6, People in the Marketplace.

For Science next week we will start Chapter 12, Objects in Motion.

Next week will we read, Moses Goes to a Concert and even learn how to
do a bit of sign language.

May 19 - 30


Right back at it in the second grade this week. No new cases of Enterovirus and classes have been going on as usual. We will continue to keep our hands and classroom clean and sterilized. If your child is feeling under the weather please have them checked out with a doctor, just to be on the safe side.

In Math class we continued with Topic 18, Adding and Subtracting Three Digit Numbers. Next week we will finish this topic and start the next one, Multiplication Concepts.

For English we have been reviewing concepts learned and practicing with capitalization and punctuation.

In Social Studies we have been focusing on Unit 6, People in the Marketplace. We found and cut out pictures of producers, goods, services, marketplaces and consumers and have displayed them around the room. If students would like to bring in any other examples of these on Monday they are more than welcome to add them to our mural. Next week we will continue with this unit and focus on occupations, income, and how things go from a resource to the store.

For Science next week we will start Chapter 12, Objects in Motion.

In Reading this week we read the story, The Art Lesson. Next week will we read, Moses Goes to a Concert and even learn how to do a bit of sign language.

The Student of the Week is William Lu. William consistently makes sure he is writing the correct answer even at the risk of taking a bit longer. Keep up the persistence.

Enterorvirus

I just wanted to make a quick note regarding the enterovirus going around. I am hearing about this out-break the same time as you. If your child is feeling under the weather at all please see a doctor. I will be ensuring that all students wash their hands and use spray throughout the day. The classrooms have been cleaned and sprayed. Hopefully there will be no new cases.

May 12-23

Much to the students' sadness the Iowa tests are now over. I was impressed with the students' dedication to the testing. Well done to all for giving your best.

Next week we will return to regular classes and much to the students' delight homework will start up again.

In Math this week we completed Topic 17, "Number and Patterns to 1,000". Monday we will have a quiz on this topic. We also started Topic 18, "Three-Digit Addition and Subtraction".

For Social Studies next week we will start Unit 6, People in the Marketplace. We will be looking at the process of how things are produced, sold and everything in between.

In English we will continue with Unit 9, More Capitalization and Punctuation.

In Reading class this week we read the chapter book titled, "The Crazy Cool Crickets" and discussed each chapter's problem and solution. Next week we will start Theme 6, Talent Show and read the story titled, "The Art Lesson"

Next week is also the art show at HIS. Student art will be displayed in the library on Wednesday morning. The second grade class will be going to the library at 9:30 - 10:20 to look at all the artworks. Parents are welcome to come in during this time. If you are not able to make it during this time, you can still check out the art in the morning or afternoon on Thursday or Friday.

The student of the week this week is Ashley Wang. Ashley always tries her best in class and showed good concentration during the Iowa tests this week. Keep it up!

May 6 - May 16

What a good week for the Second Grade!

For Reading this week we read the stories Curve in the River and Slippery Siblings and compared them. Next week we will read a chapter book called The Crazy Cool Crickets.

In Math we have been looking at numbers up to 1,000 and next week we will start unit 18, Adding Three Digit Numbers.

In English we continued to focus on punctuation and capitalization.

In Science this week we wrapped up the unit of study on sound.

Next week in Social Studies we will start Unit 6, People in the Marketplace.

Next week is also time to take the Iowa test. Please find the schedule below (5/7 blog post). The testing will take place in the morning so please ensure your child is here on time in the morning as well as getting enough sleep at night. Next week there will be no other tests and homework besides reading for 20 minutes.

Congratulations to Shido Yamamoto for being the Student of the Week. Shido has improved his classroom participation and the amount of work he is able to complete.

April 28 - May 9


This week was short but sweet, highlighted by the field trip to Green World. Stay tuned for pictures of the rainy but fun day.

In Math this week we learned about numbers up to 1,000. Next week we will continue with this.

For Science we looked at sound which included how to manipulate the pitch and volume of sound. Next week we will conclude this chapter and take a quiz.

In English this week we looked at capitalization and punctuation. Next week we will continue with this.

We read Thunder Cake in this week's reading class . Next week we will read two stories and compare them - Curve in the River and Slippery Siblings.


Congratulations to Yu Shimono for being the Student of the Week. Yu did a wonderful job on her art project and continues to be a very helpful student. Keep it up!
