As the weather cools down the school year heats up in the second
grade. We had a busy week this week with lots of learning activities.
Next week we will start preparing for international week which will be
held during the last week of February. We will be choosing a country
of study and start to conduct research to present to the school. More
information on this to come, including how you can help.

We will also be getting ready for our Chinese New Year Celebration,
which will include starting a few projects next week.

In Math this week we completed our chapter study on Fractions and
started Chapter 10, titled Addition with Regrouping.

For English class the students finished writing their stories and have
been turning them into an Ebook in computer class. I will post these
stories on my blog once they are finished. We also started our next
unit of study, titled Verbs.

In Science we completed our chapter study on Life Cycles and next week

and this week we studied Heritage, Landmarks, Heroes and Holidays.
Next week we will have a quiz on this unit.

Congratulations to Taichi Nishiwaki for being this week's student of

January 14-18

Welcome back and Happy 2013!

It was wonderful to see everyone after the break.  We all enjoyed
telling and listening to stories about our holidays.

For Math this week, we started Chapter 9 on Fractions.  I was
impressed with how fast the students picked up this concept.  Next
week we will finish this chapter as well as having the Math quiz on
Unit 3.

For Reading this week, we read a story called "A Bushy Mustache."
Next week we will read the last story titled “Jamaica Louise James.”

In Science, we studied the life cycle of animals and compared the
differences among animals.  The students also created a life cycle
sequence of an animal of their choice and this will be displayed.  Well done!

For Social Studies next week we will continue with Chapter 4 with a
focus on "Heroes."

In English this week we began to publish our stories.  Next week we
will finish our e-book and I will post it on my blog for all to enjoy.

Reading Strategies For Children:

Here are 5 reading strategies for children that can help children become better readers.

Visualize: Have children imagine or draw what a character looks like. Have them verbally explain what a setting looks like. Many students think visually while others have difficulty, so this can be helpful for both types of learners.

Summarize: Having them retell the text challenges their retention. Summarization allows students to differentiate between the main thoughts and the minor details. After finishing a chapter or section, have them retell what they just read and then write down a brief summarization.

Predict: Have them predict what they think will happen next. Ask why. This helps encourage active reading and helps them stay engaged with the text. This can also help signal a misunderstanding of the text that needs revisiting.

Ask Questions: Have children come up with questions about the text, steer them away from the questions about minor details and have them focus on questions about the meaning or morals. This helps nurture active learning.

Find Connections: Have them relate a character in the text to themselves or someone else they know. Have them connect different similarities and direct opposites. This will help them understand the text from a new perspective and encourages deeper thought.
