January 21-25

As the weather cools down the school year heats up in the second
grade. We had a busy week this week with lots of learning activities.
Next week we will start preparing for international week which will be
held during the last week of February. We will be choosing a country
of study and start to conduct research to present to the school. More
information on this to come, including how you can help.

We will also be getting ready for our Chinese New Year Celebration,
which will include starting a few projects next week.

In Math this week we completed our chapter study on Fractions and
started Chapter 10, titled Addition with Regrouping.

For English class the students finished writing their stories and have
been turning them into an Ebook in computer class. I will post these
stories on my blog once they are finished. We also started our next
unit of study, titled Verbs.

In Science we completed our chapter study on Life Cycles and next week
we will start our next chapter titled, Rocks, Soils, and Fossils.

For Reading this week we read "Jamaica Louise James" and the students
designed a book cover for a story and made very impressive posters to
display. Next week we will read "Grandpa's Corner Store" and Barrio"
and compare the two stories.

Our unit of study in Social Studies class is called People Long Ago
and this week we studied Heritage, Landmarks, Heroes and Holidays.
Next week we will have a quiz on this unit.

Congratulations to Taichi Nishiwaki for being this week's student of
the week. Taichi always looks for opportunities to be responsible in
class and asked questions when he is unsure of the answer. Keep up the
good work!
